Iodoform is an antiseptic agent of prolonged action

Appointment:

• Iodoform is used to treat root canals of teeth as a component of some pastes used to fill the canals.
• Iodoform has a long-lasting bactericidal effect and a weak analgesic effect, and also stops capillary bleeding, does not irritate the periapical tissues when removed beyond the apex.
• Iodoform in contact with tissue, and especially with serum or purulent exudate, undergoes gradual decomposition, releasing free iodine.

Indications for use:

• Recommended for use in therapeutic dentistry (especially in children's therapeutic dentistry) in the form of pastes and suspensions for the treatment of teeth. Upon contact with tissues and tissue secretions, iodine is released, which has a bactericidal effect and also stimulates the formation of granulations.

Side effects:

• When using the drug, the phenomena of iodism (non-infectious inflammation of the mucous membranes in the places of iodine release during overdose or individual intolerance of iodine drugs) may be observed.

Contraindication:

• Increased sensitivity to iodine.
